Why KAVC should get back to the drawing board...

Ruud van Nistelrooy and Wayne Rooney each scored to give Manchester United a valuable win that ended Arsenal's unbeaten League run on 49 games. This was on 24th October, 2004. My roommate (at MUBS) disappeared for 3 days for having betted on Arsenal making it 50 games unbeaten. This is what every volleyball club in Uganda was hoping UCU Doves would do to the tittle favorites KAVC last weekend at Namboole stadium. I hope no one lost a bet because even 'Brother Paul' (a Pig version of Octopus Paul) had predicted a KAVC win. Instead 40-years old KAVC ( men) cemented their lead on the top of the national Volleyball league with a 3:1 win over university the University side.

UCU had assembled the best side in power trio of Endra Joel and Tom Amaou. Endra lived to his billing by single handedly stopping Piere Kamugasha 8 time in the third set as opposed to 3 from Piere Kamugasha against the Law student.

Honestly despite not taking a point from KAVC, UCU can be credited for offering a better challenge against the table leaders losing, 30:28, 25;22,27:29, 28:26. In fact if Tom Amaou was at the top of is game and converted or at least tried to convert the 10 balls he pounded in the centre of the net; may be the story would have been different. I honestly think, guaging from the way KAVC played last week; Kamugasha should revise his attack options especially when face with a seemingly shorter net defense.

I also think UCU's Head coach Nason should have given Endra a more attacking role than given to Tom Amaou. KAVC Setter Mathew Amolo should also up his game; as he offers a lot of options just like he demonstrated when brought on in the the 4th set. One step at a time and self confidence and assurance from the team members will do for the teacher. True the Namboole wind ( simmilar to the Moonsoon wind) is unpredictable, and so this has to always be taken in consideration. The 1st round is over and the second round to me will offer more competition than the first round as all teams will come blazing, especially for KAVC. Its easier getting to the top, but very expensive maintaining it. Ask Arsenal supporters if you may. Am certain that most teams have also gone back to the drawing board, not only for KAVC, but to win the negotiate play off slots. Best of luck folks as you explore a more virgin field of Mem 2010. Lets see what Brother Paul will pick during Mem 2010.
