Last quarter 2010
Here is the last quarter of 2010, am reviewing my achievements, blessings and all the nice stuff. No one ever really wants to remember the bad stuff save for correcting short falls or the tabloids or gossips or ...the list could go on, and on, and on.
Anyway, in this brain neuron transmission, I remembered all the uncles and aunties I wanted to be like when I grew up, (not that am completely grown). But you know, all the local sports heroes like the hunks who participated in the inter-hall games at Makerere University in 1990s or 2000 something. I can't help but wonder if I could blame their disappearance on the educational access that has been debated since the 1960s, or terrorists or credit crunch or global warming. Then came the USPA awards that I thought would answer my question of "where is my unsung hero"? These awards are given every month to the greatest sports personalities of that month and an annual grand dinner to celebrate who the Sports press association has indeed been the sports personality of the year.
I totally appreciate these but the dominance of individual sport continues to baffle me. What happened to team sports like soccer, basketball, rugby, hockey, or even the embattled cricket? It seems for some reason the teams never seem to make any appearance in these awards. Apart from a cameo appearance by the rugby team a few years ago when they won the Cup of Rugby, effectively making them the champions of Africa, there has not been much success in the team sport arena. What this says to me is that the sport strongholds have been shaken. This has inadvertently given rise to individual merit sports such as athletics as the next citadel of silverware to which Ugandans will run (no pun intended). Or does the solution lie with the sport promoters? That is something we are waiting to see unfold given the recent launch and signing on of Kinetic Management in Uganda as the premier sports management solution provider. After signing on a couple of players in the local league, some athletes of mediocre repute and managing the execution and delivery of the recently concluded the Hima 7's, they are looking like a promising lot to which we shall eventually pay respect for picking sport out of the doldrums. In other parts of the universe, this quarter I plan to keep fit by cheering on my unsung heroes' wherever they may be, especially the hunks and beautiful peoples who partake in team sport. Even more importantly are those who bear the national flag despite the great shoulders you have to have in order to accomplish such a feat.
For God and my country.
Happy Independence Day.
